Spokane Planting Schedule & Growing Guide

(Zone 6b, Gardenary-Inspired: Cold → Cool → Warm → Hot Seasons)

🌱 Healthy soil = happy seeds.

Before planting, mix in compost, worm castings, or well-aged manure. Think of soil like a pantry—your plants need nutrients stocked before they move in!

🌿 Arugula

Spokane loves arugula in the cool season—it's one of the first seeds we can plant! Sow directly outdoors as soon as soil is workable, typically late March to mid-May, or again late August for a fall crop. Fast germinator. No need to start indoors—just loosen the soil, sprinkle seeds, and lightly cover.

🌱 Cool Season

🥕Carrots

Carrots hate being transplanted—always sow directly into loose, rock-free soil. Plant outside mid-April to mid-June. Cool-loving, so they germinate best when soil is still chilly. Thin seedlings for bigger roots. Fun fact—carrots actually sweeten after a light frost!

🌱 Cool-Warm Season

🫘Bush Beans

Warm-season grower. Wait until soil is warm (at least 65°F)—usually late May to early June. Never start indoors; beans want warm soil and direct sowing. Plant in succession every 2–3 weeks for harvests all summer. No frost tolerance—don't jump the gun!

🌱 Warm Season

🥒Cucumbers

A warm-season climber that loves heat and sun. Start indoors mid-April (4–6 weeks before transplanting) or direct sow outside late May to early June. Transplant after all frost risk has passed. Train on a trellis for clean fruit and happy vines.

🌱 Warm Season

🌸Zinnias

Your pollinator magnet and edible flower. Warm-season grower. Start indoors mid-April or direct sow after frost—late May. Loves full sun, heat, and thrives in well-fed soil. Keep deadheading for continuous blooms. Perfect for gifting!

🌱 Warm Season

🌿 Spinach

Cold-tolerant and hardy—plant directly outdoors from early April through late May, or again in late August for fall harvests. You can also start indoors 3–4 weeks before planting out, but spinach prefers being directly sown. Likes rich, moist soil—shade cloth can help during warmer days.

🌱 Cool Season

🌿Radishes

A true beginner favorite. Sow directly in the garden early April through early June, and again in late August through October. Sprout in about 4–6 days—great for impatient gardeners. Pair with carrots or lettuce for "companion planting magic."

🌱 Cool Season

🫛Peas

A classic "Cool Season" crop. Can be sown outdoors as early as late March, as soon as the soil can be worked (peas like cold feet!). Plant again in late August for a fall harvest. Support with a trellis, fence, or netting. Sweetest when picked young.

🌱 Cool Season

🥬Zucchini

Spokane favorite! Start indoors late April, then transplant in late May or early June when nights stay above 50°F. Or direct sow when the soil is fully warm. Zucchini is generous—one plant can feed a neighborhood. Likes full sun and compost-rich soil.
